![]() ![]() Now Microsoft is burdened with being “bug compatible” to old versions. A big part of the problem is that IE used to have 90%+ of the market and had many bugs the web developers were forced to code for IE’s bugs or have a site that didn’t work in 90% of their viewer’s browsers. Internet Explorer is the worst standards wise of any of the five common browsers. The other thing that helps ensure that a site will work correctly in a browser (and thus not drive users away) is to have a browser designed to the published standards. Web developer tools are available as an add on for Firefox and integrate just as well as any other browser’s toolkit. Firefox stands as the only browser in this list that does not include developer tools as part of the browser. It is for that reason that many browsers have implemented a developer toolkit as part of the browser. A web developer is the person who writes the webpages a user consumes a browser that makes their life harder is a browser less likely to be supported. Add ons are available for everything from browser themes, to complicated interfaces for web services.Īn important point of view to consider with any type of browser comparison is that of the web developer. ![]() With over 6,000 add ons available to suit any taste, Firefox has been more or less able to keep its feature set reasonably slim. Since the inception of Firefox in 2004, it has been designed to be lean and extensible. ![]() Instead, they are banking on “Opera Unite”, a personal web server that runs as part of the browser and allows the user to share documents, photos, and other things of their choosing right from their desktop.įor Mozilla’s Firefox, a third different approach has been taken. They have many features to appeal to technical people yet they have the lowest market share of any browser discussed. Opera has taken a different direction towards attracting people to its browser. The other large difference with Web Slices as compared to the standard RSS reader is that Web Slices are in a floating window so one doesn’t have as much of a mental context switch from the current page they are on. Web Slices are a similar interface and behavior to that of an RSS feed, but instead of a feed with individual posts, Web Slices are more suited for things like an auction or sports score. Microsoft also offers Web Accelerators, a framework for people to have plugins that will show a map, start a blog entry, perform comparison shopping, or just a plain web search. Conversely, web developers can use compatibility view to test for both IE8 and IE7 on the same machine to ensure that the largest audience can use their site. This feature, while it wouldn’t have been necessary if Microsoft had coded to the standards in the first place, allows users to view a site that would otherwise be broken on their computer. In Internet Explorer, Microsoft implemented a Compatibility View mode that makes IE8 behave like IE7, rendering bug wise. In this age of browser wars, many browsers are once again trying to implement features exclusive to each browser. RSS is essentially a news feed and is designed to be light on bandwidth usage so users can check it frequently for updates and see a summary to decide if an article is worth reading. It allows web designers to load in new content, change CSS attributes, or perform various other page manipulations without a page reload. Javascript is used by most modern websites to provide the dynamic aspects of the webpage. CSS is the method for applying styles to a webpage with more control and simplicity than the old HTML presentation tags. As HTML is the main markup language used on the web, no browser would make it out the door without basic HTML support. However, on technical sites, the statistics are skewed away from Internet Explorer.Īssuming the user has not disabled them, all browsers mentioned support some level of HTML, CSS, RSS and JavaScript. The graph to the left shows the relative market share statistics of the browsers under discussion pulled from five different statistic networks for December 2009. Chrome, and Opera (ignoring basic mobile browsers).Īn important thing to note in any browser comparison is the relative market shares of the different browsers. With all of that in mind, there are five main browsers: Safari, Firefox, Internet Explorer. The average user only cares about the familiarity of the interface to open the browser. For the average user, the war between Mac, Windows, and Linux has been lost to the web browser. People are playing games, writing their letters to Grandma, and communicating with their coworkers. More than ever people are turning toward web-based services for the most common tasks. The web browser is one of the most common things that people interact with on their computer. ![]()
